Regenerative and Stem Cell Based Medicine
Regenerative Medicine – An Overview
Regenerative medicine refers to treatments and modalities which aim to rebuild the body, repair injury, manage illness, rejuvenate tissue and generally use the body’s own capabilities to restore its natural state. A stem cell, in simple terms, is an undifferentiated cell which has the ability to stay as a stem cell, or develop into another specialised type of cell, for example a muscle or brain cell. Stem-cell-based regenerative interventions are a collection of treatments which specifically involve the activation and stimulation of the cells responsible for building that specific tissue type, however the process is more complex than simply extracting and injecting stem cells.
Understanding Regenerative Medicine
What is important is to understand the terminology used. While many of these treatments do involve the use and stimulation of stem cells, it is not accurate to simply call all of these ‘stem cell treatments’ as there is a lot more to the process. Stem cell treatments have, incorrectly, become a ‘magic bullet’ for many people, with claims of “no more surgery” and “magic cure” attracting more and more clients to clinics providing these treatments. With a complex mix of stem cells, progenitor cells, leucocytes, growth factors and many other compounds, these treatments involve much more than just stem cells. Most regenerative treatments can be used very effectively for specific conditions, once they are correctly prescribed and administered by a qualified professional as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Is it right for me?
When considering having a stem-cell-based intervention or regenerative treatment, you need to consult carefully with a qualified healthcare professional experienced and proficient in stem-cell-based therapies. The person providing the treatment should discuss with you all of the available options, including alternate options like surgery if this is relevant, and adjunctive treatments, which may work alongside a stem-cell-based therapy to enhance results. In many cases the treatment alone can indeed provide significant positive outcomes for clients, but it’s the discussion and exploring the options with qualified professionals which leads to a knowledgeable client, and effective results.
What can we treat?
There are many different injuries and conditions that can be treated with stem-cell-based interventions and regenerative medicine, with great success. From sports injuries, degenerative issues associated with normal ageing like joint pains and aches, aesthetic/cosmetic concerns and medical conditions, the list is almost endless, and as these treatments develop and research continues, more and more applications will be discovered.
Stem-cell-based regenerative interventions are designed to restore, repair and grow the body’s tissues. Therefore, they can be used for a huge range of conditions and complaints. These are some of the most common applications that we perform at NuaCell:
